Landfill and Mining Caps

    Composite Cap or Cover

Fig. 1

Fig. 1 shows the common usage of a GCL within a final cover for composite caps or covers in landfills or for mining applications. In this application, the flux rate of fluid leakage through the GCL is influenced by the head of fluid acting on the GCL and the presence of an overlying geomembrane. Typically the head is limited to less than 30 cm. The stability of the GCL is influenced by the slope angle , the normal load gradients, and the interface friction angle , with adjacent layers. Additionally the performance of the GCL is influenced by the elongation performance of the GCL during differential settlement. Freeze/thaw effects as well as dry/wet effects in this application are usually not of a concern due to the overlaying geomembrane.

Bentofix® GCLs with one woven and nonwoven component are best suited for this application in designs up to approx. 18°, with a nonwoven on both sides typically steeper designs than with woven components, due to an increase of the interface friction angle are possible. Additionally Bentofix® with a nonwoven on both sides has a higher elongation capacity which is beneficial in applications with expected differential settlement.
